About the 3 Lone Nuts

Welcome to our corner of the blog-o-sphere and welcome to the Reading (R)evolution. This blog serves as a tool for self-reflection, a means through which we collaborate, and it is (hopefully) an outlet for dialogue and inspiration to our readers.

Who are we?

Collectively, we are three teachers from Trumbull High School in Trumbull, CT. Trumbull is part of Fairfield County and as of 2012 had a population of 36,008. The median household income is $105,020 and the number of students at the High School in 2012 was 2,195. Individually we are:

Jim McCaffrey

I graduated from Fairfield University in 2004 with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree, majoring in English and minoring in Education and Religious Studies. I earned my Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) from Sacred Heart University in 2013. I am currently pursuing my 6th year in the Connecticut Literacy Specialist Program at Sacred Heart University.

Professionally, I did my student teaching at Derby High School in Derby, CT in the spring of 2004. I worked at Stamford High School in Stamford, CT from 2004-2010, where I taught the 9th grade retention course, Sheltered II English, 10 ACP, 10 Honors, 12th grade electives (Themes in Literature, Sports Literature, Newspaper, and SciFi). Currently, I am teaching at Trumbull High School and have taught and/or am currently teaching, 9ACP, 10ACP, 11ACP, 11CP Team Taught, and 12th grade electives (Poetry, SciFi, Honors World Literature, and Adolescent Experience). Recently, I presented with Karlen Shupp at the 2014 NCTE Conference regarding our use of modeling in our classrooms. Check out our presentation here: Putting Yourself On(the)line.

I have many passions in my life: the most important is my family. My wife and I live in town. We were married in July of 2008. We welcomed our daughter Mia into this world in June of 2010 and James, our son, followed 19 months later in February of 2012. I am an avid runner and serve as the Head Coach of Girls Outdoor Track and Girls Cross Country at THS. Additionally, I am a Firefighter in the Truck Company at Long Hill Station 2 (in Trumbull). I believe wholly and completely in this simple, yet important quote – “One ounce of action beats a ton of words.”

I graduated from Keene State College in 1998 with my B.A. in Spanish, B.S. in Elementary Education and a Secondary Education Certification.  During my time at Keene, I studied abroad at the Universidad de Sevilla for a semester. I earned my M.S. in Remedial Reading and Writing at Southern Connecticut State University.

My career began as a student teacher at Fall Mountain Regional High School and Peterborough Elementary School in New Hampshire.  My Connecticut teaching career began at Staples High School in Westport, CT where I taught Spanish for 10 years.  I am currently a reading specialist at Trumbull High School.  I have presented at the Connecticut Council of Language Teachers (COLT) in 2001 and the Connecticut Reading Association (CRA) in 2014.

I love spending time with my family in Lake George, New York, hiking, running, and (of course) reading.

I am just generally awesome.  End of story.

For the data-driven who actually scrolled down this far: I earned a B.A. in English from Boston College in 1998, a M.Ed. in Secondary Education also from Boston College in 1999 (GO EAGLES!), student taught at Brookline High School in Brookline, MA, had teaching stints at Pomperaug Regional High School, Western Connecticut State University, and most recently at Trumbull High School.  I have taught all grades and all levels, 9-12 and beyond.  I presented at the NCTE 2014 Annual Convention in Washington, DC with Jim McCaffrey (“Putting Yourself On(the)line: Teaching Students Through Modeling”).

My passions include: full-contact origami, underwater basket weaving, preventing my three sons from destroying my house, and searching for my sanity (which I seem to have misplaced).

  1. You go!

I am a high school librarian and I implemented an FVR program during the study blocks of my high school 3 years ago. It’s all about modeling, choice, access and TIME!! If this generation doesn’t embrace reading, I fear for them. Stumbled upon a Book Love video about 6 months ago and it rocked my world that TEACHERS were finally getting it. They have been my hardest sell.

Ya’ll go with your bad selves in Connecticut. Can I completely steal your Reading Revolution slogan for my students in Virginia?
